We looked at lumens, lux, candles, & moons to MEASURE LIGHT.

We decided simple is good. Easy is good. Less is more. So, we ask the question:

Can you read with your lantern/flashlight?

 

If you can read with your lantern/flashlight, your lantern/flashlight is READABLE. MOST other TASKS/JOBS should be SEEABLE. In other words if you can read with it, you can see with it.

If your lantern/flashlight is READABLE-SEEABLE, also ask is what you can see with the light: Adequate? Sufficient? (So as not to ruin your eyes) or Preferred? Then rate what you see with the reading light using the words: Good, Better, Best, Excellent.

Also ask at what Distance is your current lantern/flashlight READABLE-SEEABLE?

To determine distance use: Longitudinal Distance (length) AND Lateral Distance ("of, at, toward,

or from the side" - (American Century Pocket Dictionary).

Also ask does your lantern/flashlight have up to 150 Hours of Battery (Alkaline) Life?

One who can read can MEASURE LIGHT using the READING LIGHT TEST.

NEEDED To MEASURE LIGHT in the READING LIGHT TEST:

1.) A dark room or area with lantern/flashlight, 2.) your favorite book, (We used size 14 font letters/words.) 3.) a yard stick. 4.) paper/pencil/pen or electronic device to record results.

ACTIVE DIRECTION To MEASURE LIGHT in the READING LIGHT TEST:

1.) Place your lantern/flashlight on the outside wall in the middle of a room, on the floor, 1 foot up, or 3 feet up.(We used 3 feet up in our test in a white walled area. ) Note: Results will vary in a room with dark walls (will absorb the light), vs. a room with white walls (will reflect the light). 2.) Switch the lantern/flashlight on. 3.) Measure the Longitudinal Distance (how far) from the outside wall (or lantern/flashlight) to the end of it's most READABLE-SEEABLE LIGHT. Record. Repeat for Latitudinal Distance. Record. 4.) You decide if your current lantern/flashlight READABLE-SEEABLE LIGHT is adequate (it will do, has much light, but is insufficient), sufficient (it has more than enough light), or preferred (you like it most) .

The Hand Lantern's Tilt Head tilts up and down.

2.) Our Little Brother's 1 LED Swing Lanterns have an Excellent 360 Degrees of Light. You can see in front, in back, and to the sides. The light illuminates a 20 x 20 area. The MOST READABLE-SEEABLE LIGHT is EXCELLENT at 1.5 to 3 feet. The R-S Factor is GOOD at 20 feet. 12 feet is BETTER, 6 feet is BEST. Lateral Factor Distance = Same as Long Distance.This nostalgic little lantern is nice to look at, is perfect for card playing and other games, for many tasks, or dinner by lantern light.

3.) Our Little Brother's 2 LED Safari-Lite Lanterns have an Excellent Light Area. The light illuminates a 20 x 20 foot area quite well. The READABLE-SEEABLE LIGHT length is GOOD at 20 feet,

BETTER up to 12 feet, > BEST at 6 feet, EXCELLENT at 1.5 to 3 feet. The optional 12 Volt Adapter uses electricity at the rate of 4.5 watts. This lantern light is an Excellent Multiple Purpose Lantern.

Some Lanterns/Flashlights/OtherPortableLights may boast of greater light distance and brightness. Use the READABLE-SEEABLE LIGHT TEST to MEASURE LIGHT of those products. Then consider:

1.) READABLE/SEEABLE LIGHT Distance, 2.) Illumination DISTANCE,

AND up to 150 HOURS of BATTERY LIFE.

These have not as yet been tested by us using the READABLE/SEEABLE LIGHT TEST. Sealed Beam Battery Life will last about 3 to 4 hours. Krypton Bulb Battery Life will last about 6 to 7 hours. The Krypton Bulb covers "about the same area as a Hand Lantern LED", but the light "is not as bright as the LED light." (Factory/Plant Experience) 11-11-11
